At Roseville, traffic is slow on the Pacific Highway.
8:40am: And while we’re in South Africa, Nelson Mandela is still in intensive care in a Pretoria hospital for a lung infection and had family visit him overnight.

8:37am: Oh dearrrrrr.
Cape Town is in the grips of a poo war. At least 180 people have been arrested, some carrying bags of human waste, ahead of a planned protest over the lack of proper sanitation in the South African city.

8:35am: All northbound lanes are now open on the Warringah Freeway in Milsons Point after a two car accident but traffic going over the Harbour Bridge is very heavy.
Allow extra travel time or use the Tunnel.
8:25am: But Garrett was also firing up about being locked out of a Queensland school because he was supposedly using school kids as pawns in his Gonski announcement.
Education Minister Peter Garrett says QLD banning him from visiting two Brisbane Schools is a ‘sad day for democracy.’

8:22am: After all this talk of “men in blue ties” that will wreak havoc on the nation (see the back story here) Peter Garrett is weaing a blue tie this morning. Awkward.

8:15am:Feminist and founder of Destroy The Joint Jane Caro has told ABC Radio her “heart sank” when she saw Julia Gillard’s “Women for Gillard” campaign yesterday which has since been slammed by both sides of politics.
“My feeling was this is not the way to win an election,” she said. “I don’t think there is a party for women and I’m not sure there ever should be a party for women. I think there should be a party for people who believe in social justice.”

8:10am: There’s some incredible footage from anti-G8 protests in London.
Police restrained a man who scaled the edge of the building before launching into a run towards the edge. Police wearing protective harnesses get the man to the ground from where he is later lowered and taken to hospital. You can watch it here.

At Woolloomooloo, Riley Street is closed due to a police operation.
At Rouse Hill, a car and truck have crashed in fog on Windsor Road citybound at Annangrove Road.
7:55am: There’s been a motorcycle-jacking in western Sydney overnight.
A man was riding a soft tail Harley Davidson along Corio Road in Prairiewood around 6.45pm last night when a silver Subaru WRX cut him off in traffic.
The motorcycle rider was forced to pull over to the side of the road where two men exited the Subaru and alleged threatened the motorcyclist with a knife and demanded he hand over his motorcycle. After complying with the demands, the victim was punched to his face.
One of the men got back into the Subaru and the other man mounted the victim’s motorcycle, before both vehicles were driven away.
There is a description for the first man only: Caucasian in appearance, about 183cm tall, a thin but muscular build, about 25-30 years old with a New Zealand accent. He was wearing a black jumper and black beanie.
7:51am: I’m loving Greg Baum’s wrap of the Socceroos win last night. Archie Thompson was “a local DJ to tap out the rhythm of the outbreaking party” but Tim Cahill was the consummate showman.
The Socceroos play Iraq on Tuesday and will go straight through to the Wold Cup if they win.

7:31am: Anyway, enough of federal politics for a few minutes. It’s making my heard hurt.
More than 150 Department of Fair Trading officers were sent into 219 tobacconists, adult shops and service stations yesterday to implement a statewide ban on 19 synthetic drugs.
At 21 shops they found goods on sale that were banned after north shore teenager Henry Kwan jumped off a balcony while on synthetic LSD.
7:27am:NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli says any politician is welcome in a NSW school provided they give five days notice.
But he’s told ABC Radio it’s a shame Gonski has turned from an “absoluty critical policy argument into a political argument”.
What do you think? Should Garrett have been locked out of the school?
7:24am: Queensland reportedly told the government they were fed up with their “schoolchildren being used as props” in a political campaign.
Julie Bishop said state government schools should not be used for partisan purposes.
“Federal politicians and particularly the Prime Minister should not be using school children and public schools to promote the Labor Party,” she told Sky News this morning.
7:24am: The Women for Gillard event isn’t the only debacle for the government.
Julia Gillard was locked out of a televised show she was to appear on with British comedian Ben Elton in a Perth school last night after West Australian Premier Colin Barnett ordered the Education Department to cancel it.
And School Education Minister Peter Garrett received similar treatment in Queensland, where he was to spruik Gonski reforms before the state banned him.

7:20am: No surprises for guessing that Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop would jump on the gender/abortion card that Gillard pulled out yesterday.
Speaking on Sky News this morning, she says Gillard knows that the Coalition has no plans to change abortion laws.
“For her to raise it as an election issue is as offensive as it is false. She really should apologise for trying to scare woman.”

6:51am: Revelations of a long history of sexual violence during the pre-sentencing hearing of Adrian Ernest Bayley yesterday must have been heartbreaking for Jill Meagher’s family.

And Dan Oakes has written a fascinating run-down of how the net closed on Bayley.

6:46am: Great news that a man who stole a car with a two-year old girl inside earlier this week has been found and arrested.
The 32 year-old allegedly stole the car from the carpark of the Coffs Central Shopping Centre on Monday and drove off with the girl sitting in the back seat.
The car was abandoned nearby a short time later and the girl was found safe but shaken up.
The man was arrested last night and charged with take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage, unlawfully take/drive motor vehicle with person in it, steal from person and custody of a knife in a public place.
6:42am: And this less-than-flattering assessment from feminist Eva Cox on ABC Radio:
“It looked as though she was trying to set this up with references to blue ties and abortion as a sort of personality fight between two people rather than what the whole thing should be about which is good policy. Women don’t vote as a bloc anyhow.”

6:41am: She hosted a “Women for Gillard” event yesterday but the PM’s attempt to play the gender card has seirously backfired among feminists.

And author and comedienne Wendy Harmer said women don’t feel serviced by that kind of campaign anymore.

At Gymea, a car has broken down northbound on the Princes Highway at Waratah Street.
There are some delays on the M4 around Homebush Bay Drive due to an earlier breakdown
It’s a good run on the M5.
6:32am: On the front pages of the major papers:
The Age in Melbourne reports that Adrian Ernest Bayley was on parole for a series of vicious sex attacks when he murdered Jill Meagher.
The Australian Financial Review reports that two big banks, including Goldman Sachs, have downgraded their economic forecasts, predicting there is a one-in-five chance of Australia dipping into a recession.
The Australian reports that the Gillard government is facing a states’ revolt over the soaring cost of healthcare for asylum-seekers and refugees, with the influx costing tens of millions of dollars and straining an already overloaded system.
The Daily Telegraph that NSW ministers have carte blanche to charge the taxpayer for flights to major interstate sporting events like the AFL grand final and the Melbourne Cup as long as there is an “official invitation”, the Premier declared yesterday.

6:29am: Coming back to news at home and it’ll be another tough day at the office for Julia Gillard.
On the front page of the today’s Sydney Morning Herald, she has attached the “men in blue ties” but the attempt to play the gender card and suggest women would be marginalised under an Abbott government has drawn fierce criticism from opponents and has even been questioned by her Labor MPs.
6:18am: To be precise, the bill shot down by a whopping 436-0 in Russia’s parliament was to ban the “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” and is part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values instead of Western liberalism.
Lawmakers have accused gays of decreasing Russia’s already low birth rates and said they should be barred from government jobs, undergo forced medical treatment or be exiled.

6:18am: Who knows what’s going on in Russia today?!
They’ve said they will consider an asylum request from Edward Snowden, should he make one.
But as much of the world moves towards legalising gay marriage, the Russian parliament has backed a bill to stigmatise gay people and ban information about homosexuality by a cool 436-0.
6:14am: And, don’t they say that behind every great man is an even greater woman?
